EPIC Future Directions Study

Kia ora New Zealand libraries

Over the last year many of you have asked the EPIC Governance Group (EGG), "What direction will EPIC adopt in the future? What can we expect in terms of future services and content?"

In response to this question, and to address the strategic issues noted in its 2007 Annual Review, the EGG is pleased to announce that they have launched a Future Directions Study to examine these questions and develop a long-term direction for EPIC.

The review will include the following steps:

  1. Consultation with overseas procurement consortia, to identify trends in consortia focus and services;
  2. Consultation with New Zealand library consortia and collaborative groups, to identify activities that could have an impact on EPIC future direction;
  3. Consultation with digital content vendors to identify trends and future directions;
  4. An on-line survey of all New Zealand librarians to obtain their perspective on EPIC products and services, the perceived benefits and challenges, and priorities for future directions;
  5. An analysis of the options, recommendations and an operational framework.

EPIC is aiming to complete the review in early October 2008. However, if necessary, EPIC will take extra time to ensure that all sectors and perspectives are represented, and that the process considers a wide range of options so that we achieve the best possible outcome.

The planned timeline for the review is as follows:

  1. Information gathering with NZ consortia, overseas consortia and vendors: June-July 2008
  2. Survey of New Zealand librarians: June-July 2008
  3. Analysis of finding and recommendation of options for further study: July-August 2008
  4. Consultation with representatives of each library sector on the recommended options: September 2008
  5. Final report and recommendations: 1 October 2008.

EPIC will provide you with updates in Library Life and on the various New Zealand library listservs, as soon as we can.

The EGG has engaged Ruth MacEachern to perform this important review. Ruth has 20 years’ experience in Canadian and New Zealand libraries, and extensive experience with LIANZA . She has recently returned to Wellington after several years as a management consultant in Ottawa, Canada.
