New Zealand Index
This is a unique archive of New Zealand content containing over 1.9 million records. It is a composite of five separate indexes of New Zealand newspapers, magazines and journals, comprising:
- NZ Science indexes NZ scientific publications from 1840 to current day
- Newzindex covers many NZ journals and major newspapers from 1985 to 2006
- Newspaper Index (the Parliamentary Library resource) deepens media coverage of political and community issues for the decade 1993 - 2003
- Index Aucklandcovers sources from Auckland’s beginning to current day community newspapers
- Index New Zealand (INNZ - the National Library resource) dates from 1987 to current day with some earlier retrospective indexing
New Zealand Index offers significantly enriched coverage of issues from a popular and research level perspective. And, effectively extends comprehensive access to NZ journals and newspapers back 10 years or more, before full-text NZ newspapers kick in.
I’ve already got access to INNZ - why do I need New Zealand Index?
Whether searching for mass media or more specialist sources, New Zealand Index will often turn up additional references not indexed by INNZ. The greater coverage of science, trade, and professional publications gives more results and of course the valuable INNZ material is covered in your search so there’s no extra effort required. Save you and your customers those frustrating ‘sequential searches’.
‘But I need the full text!’
Sure, but an identified source is half the battle – now you’ve found it exists, it gives you or the customer options: an Interloan, a fuller range of sources to select from, some assurance that you’re not missing that vital piece.
The big gain for many libraries will be unlocking value of those runs of NZ professional, trade and science journals and conference proceedings sitting on your shelves.

Yes, but the readily grasped keyword searching (just use ‘and’ between terms), very clear date ranging and the capability to easily limit a search to any one publication make it straightforward to use. And of course if you’ve used Newztext or other Knowledge Basket resources then it’s all familiar.
