Oxford developments: Oxford Art Online and Oxford Music Online (formerly Grove)
WHAT’S HAPPENING?
- All EPIC libraries that subscribe to the General ReferencePackage or Full Package now have access to the new Oxford Online products - Oxford Art Online (OAO) and Oxford Music Online (OMO). These represent a significant re-development of the Grove Art and Grove Music resources.
- Note (important!) the OMO and OAO are not subscription products in themselves, rather they are ‘gateways’ for a range of Oxford Online resources. Top right of the new Home pages you will see clearly stated what your subscription includes e.g. in OMO your EPIC sub includes the 3 titles listed but NOT the Encyclopaedia of Popular Music promoted beneath. EPIC libraries have been transferred to the core collection of resources for this financial year. Other resources could be added by negotiation (but obviously higher cost) in coming years.
- The Oxford English Dictionary included in your EPIC package remains unchanged (this was already on a more current platform).
WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO?
- The existing Grove products will remain accessible for a period of a month or so. After that there will be automatic redirects to the new OMO/OAO resources. Given that this could be confusing for your users we recommend that you implement the changes as soon as feasible.
- There are no authentication changes. All that is required is to amend the database titles and URLS on your Web pages (Internet and/or Intranet) set up to provide access to the respective Grove resources to:
Oxford Music Online http://www.oxfordmusiconline.com/
Oxford Art Online http://www.oxfordartonline.com/
- If this results in any access issues then just let us know (epic@epic.org.nz) and we’ll work with Oxford Online to resolve it promptly.
- Don’t forget to also change any bookmarked access points and descriptions on lists of e-resources etc.
WHAT’S NEW
This is more than just an upgrade - it is a substantial re-development of the platform, resource design and to some extent content.
- The new platform provides better searching and presentation of results. And its now accessible to a wider range of browsers, is Open URL compliant (ver 0.1) and meets higher accessibility standards.
- The new interface design (once you get used to it!) will give you more effective searching. Use one-page visual guides developed by EPIC to get you and your customers started. More detailed guides are readily available through Oxford – just click on the Guided Tour link in the Find Out More panels of OMO/OAO Home page. The ‘Advanced search’ provides improved searching for artists or musicians by category and browsing options are easier to use. In general there is better consolidation of the various sources in result lists making selection easier.
- There is a range of new content – new Oxford reference sources for both OMO and OAO beyond the core Grove products that will be included by default in your search results - or you can select to search them independently. OAO provides expanded image searching and updated content including better coverage of contemporary artists. Both have new learning resources - timelines and thematic guides that will be of particular interest to teachers. OMO has more dictionary type entries available from the new Oxford sources. More new content is forthcoming over the next year.
